In August 1991, a friend and I traveled to Atlanta to attend the increasingly popular circuit event, HotLanta. It was a long weekend of disco nights, private pool parties, and a raft race on Sunday morning on the Chattahoochee River. While in the bars one evening, someone told us about a suburban private pool party the next afternoon and assured us we were welcome. When we got there, the backyard and pool were crammed with several hundred muscular, attractive gay men. I didn’t even notice until later that there were no people of color in attendance at all. I saw a number of people I knew and met new friends. I was glad I had been able to attend the event.
