On my first visit to Ibiza in 1985, someone directed me to an isolated cove where several guys, clothed and unclothed, cavorted in the shallow waters of the Mediterranean. At the time, I was not familiar with the work of Thomas Eakins, an American painter and photographer primarily from the late 1800s through early 1900s, whose paintings contained coded references to homosexuality. Perhaps his most famous work, “The Swimming Hole” (1884-85), featured a group of innocent-looking young men diving into the water and horsing around. No one detected the decidedly homoerotic overtones until many years later. This photo unintentionally served as my homage to Eakin's work.
