In September 1983, I made my first visit to Mykonos, by myself. I was adopted by a vivacious Alitalia crew of male flight attendants, but wandered the island alone for much of the week. One day, while on gay Super Paradise beach, I was amazed to see a crew of German drag queens descending through the rocky hillside to the beach, dressed in all their drag finery. They rolled out beach mats as a runway and held a mock beauty contest with the nude and semi-covered beach crowd cheering them on. After the contest was over, they hung around and mingled with beachgoers.
