I took this shot for a couple of reasons: I was on 12th Street Beach in Miami (the gay beach) in early 1991 and thought this combo exuded good looks and vitality. I also found the combination of what I call “cotton candy” colors of the water, sky, sand, and clouds beguiling and wanted to capture the setting as best I could. I had no way of knowing that George DeSipio, Jr. (the fellow at the bottom of the photo) would die of complications from AIDS only 2 years later, in 1993. He was a co-founder of Living Proof, formed to demonstrate that many HIV+ people lead productive and happy lives despite their illness.
