This photo features Alan M. on Fowler Beach in 1986, 5 years before he died of AIDS. Before suburban development did away with its remote and appealing location for gays not wanting to call attention to themselves, Fowler was the gay beach in Southampton. We spent nearly every sunny day there, playing volleyball, cavorting in the Atlantic Ocean (when it wasn’t too cold), and towel hopping to socialize with others we knew.
